7. Why not just drink milk to get my Vitamin D?
In a recent study, carried out by the United States Department of Agriculture, it was found that while the government mandates that milk contain 400IU/quart, much of the sampled milk had significantly less amounts of Vitamin D than was mandated. Vitamin D2 is used to supplement Milk not Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is found naturally in one’s skin and is more biologically active. Vitamin D2 has only 30-40% of the activity that Vitamin D3 has. One would have to drink 10 glasses of milk to get the recommended dose of Vitamin D.
8. What are natural sources of Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is naturally found in the skin of a healthy person. It is made when the skin is exposed to the Ultra Violet rays of the sun. Unfortunately these are the same rays that damage skin, causing it to age prematurely and develop skin cancers. Vitamin D can also be found in some foods, namely oil-rich fish. (For many years Doctors used to give children cod liver oil to insure they receive an adequate amount of Vitamin D to prevent Rickets.)
9. Why not just take an oral Vitamin D supplement?
While there are many sources of oral Vitamin D supplements, many of them are not the Vitamin D3 form. The Vitamin D2 form is much less biologically active. Additionally, one’s body is used to making Vitamin D3 in the skin and as such is built to process the Vitamin found there. Taking an oral supplement is not the way Mother Nature wanted us to get our Vitamin D.
